Stephen Goldberg has been playing the trumpet since the age of 14, and is also skilled in the valve trombone and the flugel horn. Stephen grew up in Queens New York, and began playing trumpet at an early age. He needed to be good at something other than getting in trouble, and it was a good way to meet girls. He says: It worked! Stephen attended the Manhattan School of Music, and played in Birdland at 17. He had the opportunity to play with most of the great New York jazz musicians, as in Duke Jordan, Al Cohen and Zoot Sims, Art Blakey, and far too many others to name. Stephen also played in back-up bands of Stevie Wonder, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and others, while also touring and recording for several years with “The Brooklyn Bridge”. Additionally he toured New England, opening for Ray Charles with his band Airborne featuring his late wife singer/songwriter Rachel Bissex, for whom he produced four albums now available on CDBaby.com.
Stephen was the Musical Director for the New York dance/theater company, Nimbus. In his other life as a playwright Stephen has also written and directed over twenty-five produced plays, and Co-founded the Off Center for the Dramatic Arts in Burlington VT. He has written books of poetry and two novels.
